PhD Student Representative at the Central Level [CLOSED]
Student representation at KI’s central level is super important to make sure that the voice of doctoral students is heard in KI’s highest decision-making bodies. These are bodies that shape KI’s vision, strategy, investments, recruitment and work environment. Many of these positions require that you are proficient in Swedish as this is KI’s working language according to the law.
The DSA nomination committee will review all applications and the annual general meeting will elect suitable candidates. If elected, your position starts January 2021 and you will hold it till the end of the year.

Central-level Positions
Board of KI – Konsistoriet
The board of KI is the main decision-making body of the University. It’s composed by members appointed directly by the Swedish Government, the KI president, the university director and representatives of teachers, employees and students. The board discusses issues of different aspect, from KI’s organization to important recommendations for all university sectors. Faculty Board – Fakultetsnämnden (FN)
The Faculty Board is the second-highest decision-making body at KI, chaired by the KI president, includes the KI vice-presidents, the deans, the faculty and the student representatives and the university director. The decisions taken are related to all the academic and scientific issues, from internationalization to infrastructure and resource allocation. Committee for doctoral education – Kommittén för utbildning på forskarnivå (KFU)
The committee for doctoral education is the main body responsible of all aspects of doctoral education at KI: funding, course quality, admission and dissertation procedures, supervisor education and the green light system. Swedish is the main language: documents and discussions will be in Swedish. 3 students representatives can be appointed to this position.

Committee for research- Kommittén för forskning (KF)
The committee for research decides and discusses topics related to quality and implementation of research. Swedish is the main language: documents and discussions will be in Swedish.

Recruitment committee – Rekryteringsutskott (RU)
The recruitment committee is responsible to hire new lecturers and professors and decide upon career promotion of faculty members. Although Swedish is the main language and discussions will be in Swedish, some documents will be in English.

Docent committee – Docenturutskott
The docent committee is responsible to review the docentship applications and decides to who assign the title of docent. Swedish, some documents will be in English.

Faculty Council – Fakultetsrådet
The Faculty Council is an advisor body for the KI President lon-term strategic matters and is composed by faculty, junior faculty and student representatives and chaired by the KI president. Themes discussed included strategic collaborations, career paths, research quality and COVID-19 related issues. Swedish is the main language: documents and discussions will be in Swedish.

Ethics Council – Etikrådet
The Ethics council is chaired by the KI Scientific Representative and has the responsibility to be updated on national and international ethics discussion and to assure that an ethical discussion and behaviors are taking place within KI. The Infrastructure Committee – Infrastrukturråd
The Infrastructure Committee coordinate resources and investments within KI, in relation with external local, national and international initiatives, for educational and research infrastructures, including the newly built research centers: Biomedicum, Neo etc. Swedish is the main language: documents and discussions will be in Swedish.

KI/SLL Research Council – KI/SLL forskningsråd (FR)
The KI/SLL Research council is the body under the collaborative organization between the Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm Region responsible to discuss actions to implement the research collaborations between the 2 institutions. Work Environment Committee – Arbetsmiljönämnden
The work environment committee has the role to act as a safety committee at KI and discuss matters related to working environment legislation, laboratory safety and occupation healthcare services.
The elected person will also work as Principal Student Safety Representative and Deputy Principal Student Protection Ombudsman which role is to coordinate undergraduate and doctoral sections/departmental safety representative, collects and help students with issue related to work/educational environment. Executive Board of Cancer Research KI
The Executive Board of Cancer Research KI is the body above the umbrella organization for cancer research at KI with the goal to coordinate and support cancer and translational research. The board finds external collaborations and funders, organizes educational courses and activities, and has a dialogue with healthcare authorities. Many documents will be in Swedish, but it’s possible upon request to have meetings and discussion in English.

Pedagogical Prize Commitee – Pedagogiska Priskommittén
The Pedagogical Prize committee has the role to review the nominations and to propose a winner for the KI pedagogical prize for teachers or administrative staff who gave a big contribution in the pedagogical innovation and impact at KI. Dissertation Commitee – Disputationskommittén
The dissertation committee review and decides upon doctoral and licentiate defense applications. It meets every 2 weeks in both Solna and Flemingsberg campuses. 2 student representatives can be appointed for this position. Although the documentation will be in English, the discussions and the meetings will be in Swedish.

Course and Programme Commitee – Kurs- och programkommittén
This committee decides on courses that are given at PhD level at KI, their budget and the evaluation of the different doctoral programs and it gives suggestions on the compulsory courses in the PhD syllabus. It also has a strategic role in deciding which kind of doctoral courses and programs are needed at KI. Do you have opinions about which courses should be available? This is the committee for you! The meetings and most of the documentation are in English. Some course syllabi are in Swedish. The committee meets 2/3 times per semester for half a day. It is the responsibility of the doctoral student representative to read trough, comment and approve all the doctoral courses syllabus during the year, before the committee meeting and, once per semester, review some of the teachers’ courses evaluation that will be discussed in the meetings. The committee has 2 doctoral student representatives, and it is chaired by the deputy vice-president of doctoral education.

KI Council for Environment and Sustainable Development
The KI Council for Environment and Sustainable Development is an advisor body for the KI President on the topic of environment and sustainability work. It discusses, acts as focus group, coordinates and proposes actions related to this important matter. Swedish is the main language: documents and discussions will be in Swedish.

Steering group for KID-funding
This steering groups proposes decision on KID-funding announcements and grading criteria as well as evaluate and follow-up on previous KID-funding rounds. Swedish is the main language: documents and discussions will be in Swedish.

America-European Network Medicine Steering Group
KI has been collaborating for some time within an American-European Network Medicine, coordinated by Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) at Harvard in the United States. KI has signed an MoU with BWH for the purpose of officially joining the network. A doctoral representative in the KI steering group could help run the work on the collaboration internally at KI. Meetings and discussions could be held in English.
